Ingredients

  • 2 cups sticky rice glutinous rice
  • 2 ½ cups water
  • 1 tablespoon coconut milk optional, for extra flavor
  • Pinch of salt optional, for seasoning

Equipment

  • Rice Cooker
  • Measuring cups
  • Strainer or colander
  • Fork for fluffing the rice

Method

  1. Rinse the rice: Place the sticky rice in a strainer or colander and rinse it under cold water until the water runs clear. This step removes excess starch from the rice.
  2. Soak the rice: Transfer the rinsed rice to a bowl and soak it in water for at least 30 minutes. Soaking helps the rice cook evenly and achieve that signature sticky texture.
  3. Add rice to rice cooker: Once soaked, drain the rice and add it to the rice cooker. Add 2 ½ cups of water (adjust if necessary based on your rice cooker’s instructions). If you want to enhance the flavor, add 1 tablespoon of coconut milk.
  4. Cook the rice: Close the rice cooker and set it to cook. Depending on your rice cooker, cooking time can range from 20-30 minutes. Once the rice cooker finishes, let it rest for 10 minutes to steam in its own heat.
  5. Fluff the rice: After the rice has rested, open the rice cooker and fluff the rice gently with a fork to separate the grains.
  6. Serve: Serve your perfectly cooked sticky rice alongside your favorite dishes or enjoy it as a sweet treat like mango sticky rice.

Notes

  • Make sure to use glutinous rice (also known as sticky rice) for the best results. Regular rice won’t give you the same sticky texture.
  • If you want a richer flavor, you can add pandan leaves or vanilla extract to the cooking water for a unique twist.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat, you can steam the rice or microwave it with a bit of water to restore its texture.
  • This recipe is very versatile – feel free to add toppings like sesame seeds, fresh herbs, or even a drizzle of sweetened coconut milk for extra flavor!
