Ingredients

  • 1 cup tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce low sodium if available
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper optional

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk or spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Airtight container or glass jar (for storage)

Method

  1. Combine the Base: In a medium saucepan, whisk together tomato paste, water, and apple cider vinegar until smooth.
  2. Add Sweeteners and Flavorings: Stir in honey (or maple syrup) and Worcestershire sauce. Blend until well combined.
  3. Spice It Up: Add smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and cayenne. Simmer over medium heat for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally until thickened.
  4. Taste and Adjust: Taste the sauce and adjust sweetness or spices as needed.
  5. Cool and Store: Remove from heat and let cool. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months.

Notes

  • For a spicier sauce, increase cayenne pepper or add hot sauce gradually.
  • For a sweeter sauce, add more honey or maple syrup, balancing with a splash of vinegar.
  • If the sauce is too thick, add a little water; if too thin, simmer longer on low heat.
  • Perfect for meal prep: freeze in small portions for easy use later.
  • Customize with fruit purées, herbs, or smoky flavors to create your own twist.
