Ingredients

  • 1 pizza dough store-bought or homemade
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup sliced ham
  • 1/2 cup roasted pork shredded
  • 1 ripe plantain sliced
  • 1/4 cup sliced bell peppers red or green
  • 1/4 cup sliced onions
  • 1 tbsp olive oil for drizzling
  • Lime for garnish
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh cilantro optional, for garnish

Equipment

  • Oven
  • Pizza stone or baking sheet
  • Rolling pin (optional for stretching dough)
  • Pizza cutter or knife
  • Spoon for spreading sauce

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 220°C (425°F). If using a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat up.
  2. Roll out the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface to your desired thickness. If using a pizza stone, transfer the dough to a piece of parchment paper.
  3. Spread a thin layer of tomato sauce over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges for the crust.
  4. Layer the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly on top of the sauce.
  5. Add slices of ham, roasted pork, and the sliced plantains on top of the cheese.
  6. Scatter the bell peppers and onions evenly over the pizza.
  7. Drizzle the pizza with a little olive oil, and season with salt and pepper.
  8. Bake the pizza in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly and slightly browned.
  9. Remove the pizza from the oven and squeeze fresh lime juice over the top. Garnish with fresh cilantro if desired.
  10. Slice and serve hot. Enjoy your Cuban-inspired pizza!

Notes

  • For a healthier option, consider using a whole wheat pizza crust or a cauliflower-based crust.
  • Customise the toppings to suit your taste; feel free to add pineapple, jalapeños, or any other favourite toppings.
  • Make it vegan by substituting the cheese with a plant-based alternative and using tofu or tempeh instead of pork and ham.
  • If you prefer a crisper crust, pre-bake the dough for 5 minutes before adding the toppings.
  • The pizza can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheated in the oven for best results.
