Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar optional, for a touch of sweetness
  • ½ cup 1 stick cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • ¾ cup cold buttermilk plus 1–2 tablespoons more if needed
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter for brushing tops

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls (large and medium)
  • Pastry cutter or fork
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Rolling pin (optional)
  • Biscuit cutter or round glass
  • Oven

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  3. Cut in the butter: Use a pastry cutter or fork to blend cold butter into the flour mixture until it forms coarse crumbs.
  4. Add buttermilk: Pour in the cold buttermilk and stir gently until the dough comes together. Do not overmix.
  5. Shape the dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat it into a ¾-inch-thick rectangle. Fold once or twice for flaky layers, then cut out biscuits with a round cutter.
  6. Bake: Place biscuits on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 10–12 minutes or until golden brown.
  7. Brush and serve: Brush warm biscuits with melted butter and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For extra-fluffy biscuits, make sure your butter and buttermilk are very cold.
  • Avoid overmixing the dough—it keeps the biscuits tender.
  • You can freeze unbaked biscuits and bake them straight from the freezer (add 2–3 minutes to baking time).
  • Serve with Bob Evans-style sausage gravy for an authentic breakfast experience.
