Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef or lean ground turkey for a healthier version
  • 1 large onion sliced
  • 1 cup beef broth or vegetable broth for a vegetarian version
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour use a gluten-free flour substitute for gluten-free option
  • 1 tablespoon butter or oil
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1 cup mushrooms sliced (for added flavor)
  • Optional: 1 cup vegetables like carrots or peas for extra nutrition

Equipment

  • Skillet (for browning the hamburger patties and onions)
  • 9x13-inch baking dish (for assembling and baking the dish)
  • Spatula or tongs (for flipping the hamburger patties)
  • Measuring cups and spoons (for accurate ingredient measurements)
  • Whisk (for making the gravy)
  • Oven (for baking the dish)

Method

  1. Prepare the Patties: Shape the ground beef into 4-6 equal-sized patties. Season with salt, pepper, and any other desired spices.
  2. Brown the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a tablespoon of butter or oil. Brown the hamburger patties on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove the patties and set them aside.
  3. Sauté Onions: In the same skillet, sauté the sliced onions until soft and golden, about 5 minutes.
  4. Make the Gravy: To the onions, add the flour and stir until combined. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Season with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Let the gravy simmer until it thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Assemble the Dish: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). In a baking dish, arrange the browned hamburger patties. Pour the gravy mixture over the patties, then cover with foil.
  6. Bake: Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the patties are fully cooked and tender.
  7. Serve: Remove from the oven, discard the foil, and serve with mashed potatoes or your favorite side dishes.

Notes

  • Gravy Consistency: If the gravy is too thick, you can add more beef broth to achieve your desired consistency.
  • Vegetarian Option: For a vegetarian version, replace the ground beef with a plant-based meat substitute or a mix of lentils and mushrooms. Use vegetable broth for the gravy.
  • Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave.
  • Gluten-Free Option: Use a gluten-free flour substitute like cornstarch or rice flour to thicken the gravy.
  • Customize: Feel free to add other vegetables such as mushrooms, peas, or carrots for added flavor and nutrition. You can also experiment with different seasonings like thyme or rosemary to suit your taste.
