Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet potatoes peeled and cut into sticks or cubes
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika or chili powder optional for spice
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder or onion powder optional
  • Optional Variations:
  • Sweet: 1 tsp cinnamon + 1 tsp brown sugar
  • Herb: Fresh rosemary thyme, or parsley
  • Extra crunch: 1 tbsp cornstarch or arrowroot powder

Equipment

  • Baking sheet (for oven method)
  • Parchment paper
  • Air fryer (optional)
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Non-stick skillet or pan (for pan-frying)
  • Spatula or tongs
  • Paper towels for draining excess oil

Method

  1. Step 1 – Prepare Sweet Potatoes: Peel and cut sweet potatoes into sticks or cubes. Optional: soak in cold water for 30 minutes to remove starch. Pat dry thoroughly before seasoning.
  2. Step 2 – Season Sweet Potatoes: Toss sweet potatoes in a bowl with oil and chosen seasonings. For extra crisp, toss with cornstarch before adding seasoning.
  3. Step 3 – Cooking Methods: Oven-Baked: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Spread sweet potatoes on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake 25–30 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden and crispy.
  4. Air Fryer: Preheat air fryer to 400°F (200°C). Place sweet potatoes in a single layer. Cook 15–20 minutes, shaking halfway.
  5. Pan-Fry: Heat 2–3 tbsp oil in a non-stick pan. Fry sweet potatoes, not overcrowding, 5–7 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.
  6. Step 4 – Serve: Serve immediately with dips like ketchup, aioli, or yogurt sauce. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.

Notes

  • For maximum crispiness, don’t overcrowd baking sheet or pan.
  • Soaking removes excess starch, reducing sogginess.
  • Sweet potato crunch is best eaten fresh but can be reheated in an oven or air fryer.
  • Experiment with spices for sweet, savory, or spicy variations.
