Ingredients

  • 1 cup sushi rice
  • 1 sheet nori seaweed
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Fillings of your choice e.g., sliced tuna, salmon, avocado, cucumber, pickled radish, or tofu
  • Soy sauce for dipping
  • Optional toppings e.g., sesame seeds, wasabi, spicy mayo, or teriyaki sauce

Equipment

  • Rice Cooker (optional, for cooking sushi rice)
  • Bowl (for mixing the sushi rice seasoning)
  • Spoon or Spatula (for spreading the rice)
  • Knife (for slicing the sandwich)
  • Flat surface (for assembling the sandwich, like a clean cutting board)

Method

  1. Prepare the sushi rice: Rinse the sushi rice thoroughly in cold water until the water runs clear. Cook the rice according to the package instructions, preferably in a rice cooker. Once the rice is cooked, let it cool for about 10-15 minutes.
  2. Season the rice: In a small bowl, mix the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Gently stir the mixture into the cooked rice, ensuring that it’s evenly distributed. Let the rice cool to room temperature.
  3. Prepare the fillings: Slice your chosen fillings (e.g., fish, avocado, cucumber, etc.) into thin, bite-sized pieces. Set them aside, ready for assembly.
  4. Assemble the sushi sandwich: Place a sheet of nori on a clean, flat surface. Spread a thin layer of sushi rice on top of the nori, leaving a small border at the edges. Add your desired fillings in the center of the rice. If you want extra flavor, you can drizzle a bit of soy sauce or spicy mayo over the fillings.
  5. Fold the sandwich: Carefully fold the nori sheet to cover the rice and fillings, creating a sandwich-like shape. Press gently to ensure it holds together.
  6. Slice and serve: Use a sharp knife to slice the sushi sandwich into squares or rectangles. Serve immediately with dipping sauces like soy sauce or teriyaki sauce.

Notes

  • Rice: Make sure your sushi rice is slightly warm when assembling to help it stick better to the nori.
  • Fillings: You can get creative with your fillings, experimenting with different types of fish, vegetables, and sauces to suit your taste.
  • Nori: If you want a crunchier sandwich, consider lightly toasting the nori before using it.
  • Vegetarian Option: For a vegetarian version, use tofu, avocado, cucumber, and other plant-based fillings instead of fish.
  • Serving: Sushi sandwiches are best enjoyed fresh, but you can wrap them in plastic wrap and refrigerate them for up to 1 day if you want to prepare them in advance.
