Ingredients

  • 2 medium-sized mirlitons chayote, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs for topping

Equipment

  • Pot for boiling mirlitons
  • Skillet for making the sauce
  • Baking dish
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Spoon for mixing

Method

  1. Prep the Mirlitons: Peel, core, and slice the mirlitons. Boil them in a pot of water for 5-7 minutes until slightly tender, then drain.
  2. Make the Sauce: In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add the onions and garlic, cooking until soft. Stir in the heavy cream, chicken broth, nutmeg, thyme, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer for 5 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  3. Assemble the Casserole: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). In a baking dish, layer the cooked mirlitons, then pour the creamy sauce over the top. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese, Parmesan, and breadcrumbs.
  4. Bake: Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  5. Serve: Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • You can add crispy bacon bits or fresh herbs like parsley for extra flavor.
  • For a vegetarian version, use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3-4 days and reheated in the oven or microwave
