Ingredients

  • 10-12 fresh mint leaves plus extra for garnish
  • 1 lime cut into wedges
  • 2 oz white rum
  • 2 tsp sugar or 1 oz simple syrup
  • Soda water club soda or sparkling water
  • Ice cubes or crushed ice

Equipment

  • Muddler: To release the oils from the mint leaves and the juice from the lime.
  • Highball glass: For serving your mojito.
  • Spoon or straw: To stir the drink and mix ingredients.
  • Jigger or measuring tool: To measure your rum and lime juice.
  • Ice cubes or crushed ice: To keep the drink cold and refreshing.

Method

  1. Muddle the mint and lime: In a highball glass, add the mint leaves and lime wedges. Use a muddler or the back of a spoon to gently muddle the mint and lime, releasing the oils from the mint and the juice from the lime.
  2. Add the sweetener: If using sugar, add 2 teaspoons of sugar to the glass and muddle again to dissolve the sugar. If using simple syrup, skip this step.
  3. Pour the rum: Add 2 ounces of white rum to the glass. Stir gently to mix the ingredients.
  4. Add ice: Fill the glass with ice cubes or crushed ice, depending on your preference.
  5. Top with soda water: Pour soda water into the glass until it's almost full. Stir gently to combine all ingredients.
  6. Garnish and serve: Garnish your mojito with a sprig of fresh mint and a lime wedge. Serve with a straw and enjoy!

Notes

  • Mint: Use fresh mint leaves for the best flavor. Avoid using dried mint or mint extract, as they won’t provide the same fresh, aromatic taste.
  • Sweetener: Adjust the sweetness by adding more or less sugar or simple syrup based on your taste preferences. You can also use honey or agave syrup for a natural sweetener.
  • Non-Alcoholic Mojito: For a mint mojito mocktail, simply omit the rum and use more soda water or a flavored sparkling water. The rest of the ingredients remain the same.
  • Flavored Variations: Try adding fruit like strawberries, mango, or pineapple to create flavored mojitos. Muddle the fruit along with the mint and lime to add extra depth to the flavor.
  • Ice: If you prefer crushed ice, it will help chill the drink faster and dilute it slightly, making it lighter. Alternatively, larger ice cubes will melt slower, keeping the drink cold for a longer period.
