Ingredients

  • 2 medium potatoes russet or Yukon Gold, peeled and cubed
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup milk or heavy cream warmed
  • ½ teaspoon salt adjust to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: minced garlic sour cream, chives, or shredded cheese

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Potato peeler
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Colander
  • Potato masher or fork
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Prepare the Potatoes: Peel the potatoes and cut them into evenly sized cubes for even cooking.
  2. Boil: Place the potatoes in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Add a pinch of salt and bring to a boil. Cook for 12–15 minutes, or until fork-tender.
  3. Drain: Drain the potatoes well and return them to the hot pan. Let them sit for 1 minute to release excess moisture.
  4. Mash: Add butter to the hot potatoes and mash until mostly smooth.
  5. Add Milk and Seasoning: Gradually add the warm milk while mashing until you reach your desired consistency. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Serve: Taste, adjust seasoning, add optional toppings if desired, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Yukon Gold potatoes produce a naturally buttery texture, while russet potatoes create fluffier mashed potatoes.
  • Avoid over-mashing to prevent a gummy texture.
  • Always warm the milk before adding it for the creamiest results.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 1 month.
