Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs boneless flanken beef cut into 1-inch thick strips
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds optional, for garnish
  • Fresh cilantro optional, for garnish

Equipment

  • Grill or grill pan
  • Tongs
  • Bowl for Marinating
  • Measuring spoons
  • Basting brush (optional)

Method

  1. Prepare the Marinade: In a bowl, mix the soy sauce, sesame oil, honey, minced garlic, grated ginger, rice vinegar, and black pepper. Stir well until combined.
  2. Marinate the Boneless Flanken: Place the boneless flanken strips in a resealable plastic bag or shallow dish and pour the marinade over the meat. Seal or cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight for maximum flavor.
  3. Preheat the Grill: Preheat the grill to medium-high heat (about 375°F to 400°F). If using a grill pan, heat it over medium-high heat on the stovetop.
  4. Grill the Meat: Once the grill is hot, place the marinated boneless flanken strips on the grill. Cook for 3–4 minutes per side, flipping once, until they are browned and slightly charred on the outside, with a nice sear.
  5. Rest the Meat: After grilling, let the meat rest for 5 minutes to allow the juices to redistribute.
  6. Serve: Slice the grilled boneless flanken against the grain and garnish with sesame seeds and fresh cilantro if desired. Serve with your choice of sides like rice, grilled veggies, or in tacos.

Notes

  • Marinate Longer for More Flavor: If possible, marinate the meat overnight for deeper flavor penetration.
  • Grill Timing: Adjust the grilling time based on the thickness of your boneless flanken strips. If your strips are thicker, you may need to increase the grilling time slightly.
  • Alternative Cooking Method: If you don’t have a grill, you can also sear the marinated meat in a hot pan on the stovetop or broil it in the oven.
  • Serving Suggestions: This dish pairs wonderfully with a tangy coleslaw, a fresh cucumber salad, or roasted potatoes. It can also be used as a filling for wraps or sandwiches.
