Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease your cake pan.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside.
In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Beat in the eggs one at a time, then add the vanilla extract.
Mix in the yogurt or sour cream until combined.
Gradually fold in the dry ingredients until just combined.
Gently fold in the chopped apples and nuts (if using).
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
Bake for 40–50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.
