Ingredients

  • 1 lb large shrimp peeled and deveined
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup buffalo hot sauce
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon honey optional, for sweetness
  • Fresh parsley optional, for garnish

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Deep fryer or large frying pan
  • Tongs or slotted spoon
  • Paper towels (for draining)
  • Small saucepan (for sauce)
  • Serving platter

Method

  1. Prep the shrimp: Pat the shrimp dry with paper towels. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  2. Batter the shrimp: In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and buttermilk. Dip each shrimp into the buttermilk mixture, then coat with the flour mixture, ensuring they are evenly coated.
  3. Fry the shrimp: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pan to 350°F (175°C). Fry the shrimp in batches for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  4. Make the buffalo sauce: In a small saucepan, combine buffalo sauce, butter, and honey (if using). Heat over low heat until the butter is melted and the sauce is well-combined.
  5. Toss the shrimp: Place the fried shrimp in a large bowl and pour the buffalo sauce over them. Toss to coat the shrimp evenly in the sauce.
  6. Serve: Transfer the buffalo shrimp to a serving platter and garnish with fresh parsley, if desired. Serve immediately with celery sticks and blue cheese or ranch dressing for dipping.

Notes

  • You can adjust the heat level of the buffalo sauce by adding more or less hot sauce.
  • For a lighter version, you can bake the shrimp instead of frying them.
  • If you don't have buttermilk, you can use regular milk mixed with a teaspoon of lemon juice or vinegar to create a similar tangy effect.
  • For added flavor, consider marinating the shrimp for 20 minutes before battering.
