Ingredients

  • 2 medium apples Granny Smith or Fuji recommended
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup water or apple juice optional, for adjusting consistency

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Knife and cutting board (for dicing apples)
  • Measuring spoons
  • Measuring cups
  • Strainer (optional)
  • Airtight container (for storing syrup)

Method

  1. Prepare the Apples: Peel and dice the apples into small chunks. Discard the cores and set aside.
  2. Cook the Apples: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the diced apples, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir occasionally and cook for 5-7 minutes until the apples start to soften and release their juices.
  3. Add Sweeteners: Stir in the brown sugar and maple syrup. Let the mixture cook for an additional 5-10 minutes, stirring frequently. The sugar should dissolve and combine with the juices to form a syrupy consistency. Adjust the heat as needed to prevent burning.
  4. Simmer and Adjust: If you want a thicker syrup, allow it to simmer for a little longer. Add water or apple juice if the syrup becomes too thick or if you'd like a thinner consistency.
  5. Finish with Vanilla: Once your syrup has reached your desired consistency, remove it from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract for extra flavor.
  6. Strain (Optional): If you prefer a smooth syrup, strain the mixture to remove any apple chunks and spices. Otherwise, leave the apple pieces in for a chunkier texture.
  7. Serve or Store: Pour the syrup over your favorite dishes, or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Notes

  • Customization: Adjust the sweetness of the syrup by adding more brown sugar or maple syrup, depending on your preference.
  • Spices: Feel free to experiment with additional spices such as ginger or allspice to suit your taste.
  • Storage: The syrup can be refrigerated for up to 2 weeks. For longer storage, freeze it in ice cube trays for easy portions.
  • Use: This syrup is great for topping pancakes, waffles, ice cream, oatmeal, or even savory dishes like roasted meats.
  • Consistency: If you prefer a thicker syrup, cook it for a longer period of time. To thin it out, add a bit of water or apple juice.
