Ingredients

  • 4-6 medium apples any variety of your choice, such as Granny Smith, Fuji, or Honeycrisp
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice optional, for soaking to prevent browning
  • Water for soaking apples, optional

Equipment

  • Air fryer
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Bowl (for soaking apples in lemon juice and water, optional)
  • Paper towels
  • Airtight container or vacuum-sealed bags (for storing dehydrated apples)

Method

  1. Prepare the Apples: Wash the apples thoroughly. Peel them if preferred, or leave the skin on for extra texture and fiber.Core and slice the apples into even slices, about 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick.
  2. Soak the Apples (Optional): To prevent browning, mix water and lemon juice in a bowl. Soak the apple slices for 5-10 minutes and pat them dry with a paper towel.
  3. Preheat the Air Fryer: Set your air fryer to 130°F to 135°F (54°C to 57°C).
  4. Arrange the Apple Slices: Lay the apple slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Ensure they aren't overlapping to allow proper airflow for even dehydration.
  5. Dehydrate the Apples: Set the air fryer for 3-6 hours, depending on the thickness of the slices and your desired crispiness. Check every hour or so for doneness.
  6. Cool and Store: Once the apples are dehydrated and crispy, remove them from the air fryer and let them cool completely. Store the cooled dehydrated apples in an airtight container or vacuum-sealed bag.

Notes

  • Thickness of Slices: The thinner the apple slices, the quicker they will dehydrate and the crisper they will become. For chewy apples, slice them thicker.
  • Flavors: You can experiment with adding cinnamon, nutmeg, or a pinch of sugar to the apple slices before dehydrating for a flavored twist.
  • Storage: Dehydrated apples can be stored for several months if kept in a cool, dry place. Vacuum-sealing will extend their shelf life.
  • Rehydration: To rehydrate, simply soak the dehydrated apple slices in warm water for 20-30 minutes.
